How Is CAPE Graded? Units, Modules and the Grade I–VII Scale
CAPE (the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination) is CXC’s sixth-form qualification, taken after CSEC. Its grading looks different from CSEC, so understanding how Units, Modules and papers combine helps you set targets and read your results correctly.
Units, Modules and subjects
Most CAPE subjects are made up of two Units — Unit 1 and Unit 2 — and each Unit is divided into three Modules. A Unit is a qualification in its own right: you can sit Unit 1 in one year and Unit 2 the next, or both together.
Communication Studies and Caribbean Studies are the exception — each is a single Unit that most CAPE candidates take alongside their other subjects.
The papers that make up a Unit
Each Unit is assessed by three components. Paper 01 is a multiple-choice paper (usually 45 items) testing breadth across all three Modules. Paper 02 is an essay/structured written paper testing depth, argument and application. Paper 03 is the Internal Assessment — School-Based Assessment for school candidates (Paper 03/1) or an alternative written paper for private candidates (Paper 03/2).
The three components are weighted and combined into a single Unit score, which is then converted to an overall grade.
The Grade I–VII scale
CAPE Unit grades run from Grade I (the highest) to Grade VII (the lowest). Grades I to V are the range most universities and employers treat as a pass, with Grade I signalling outstanding performance.
Alongside the overall grade, your slip shows a Module profile (how you performed in each of the three Modules) and CXC reports a Grade Point Average across your Units — useful for regional university admission.
What counts as a good CAPE grade
Because CAPE is a pre-university qualification, competitive programmes (medicine, law, engineering) typically look for Grade I and II passes in the relevant subjects. Meeting the minimum matriculation requirement usually means Grades I–V.
