Instructions to candidates

  • Section A (Issue Evaluation) is based on the pre-released resources booklet (an extract is reproduced below).
  • Section B (Fieldwork) asks about your own fieldwork and an unfamiliar fieldwork situation.
  • This paper assesses your ability to apply knowledge and skills to issues and to fieldwork.
  • The maximum mark for this paper is 76 (Section A: 37 marks including 3 SPaG; Section B: 39 marks). The marks for each question are shown in brackets.

Paper

Section A — Issue Evaluation (37 marks)

Resource extract — "Regenerating a coastal town" A small UK coastal town has high unemployment since its fishing and tourism industries declined. The council is considering three options:

  • Option 1: Build a large marina and luxury apartments to attract visitors and wealthy residents.
  • Option 2: Invest in renewable energy (an offshore wind farm) to create skilled jobs.
  • Option 3: Improve existing facilities and support small local businesses and affordable housing. [Figure 1: a map of the town. Figure 2: unemployment data 2010–2025. Figure 3: residents' survey results showing priorities.]

1.1 Using Figure 2, describe the trend in unemployment between 2010 and 2025. (3 marks)

1.2 Using Figure 3 and your own understanding, suggest one reason why residents might prefer Option 3. (3 marks)

1.3 Explain one social and one economic advantage of Option 2 (the wind farm). (6 marks)

1.4 Do you agree that Option 3 is the best option for the town? Justify your decision using the resources and your own knowledge, and explain why you rejected the other options. (9 marks) (+3 marks SPaG)

Section B — Fieldwork (39 marks)

2.1 State the title of one of your fieldwork enquiries and the hypothesis or question you investigated. (2 marks)

2.2 Justify one method you used to collect primary data. (3 marks)

2.3 Explain why you chose your sampling method. (3 marks)

2.4 Assess the effectiveness of one way you presented your data. (6 marks)

2.5 "The conclusion of a geographical enquiry is only as good as the data collected." Using your own fieldwork, evaluate this statement. (9 marks)

2.6 Questions about an unfamiliar fieldwork situation (interpreting a method, data table and student conclusion). (16 marks)
